How do I love thee...

...let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.

So, Brooks Orpik.  His "You Can Play" promo video was released today, despite being one of the first ones filmed.  Here it be:

There are reasons why he is my favorite player.  Not least because of how he plays and how it reflects his character - no-nonsense, straight-talking, up front.  Tougher than nails, businesslike yet passionate, powerful and talented.  Hard hitting, but always clean.  His sacrifice in blocking shots and taking hits, responsible and defensively-minded yet not afraid to loose a hard shot on net.  Sincere, honest, and outspoken, showing his intense leadership with actions even more than his words.  Professional yet blunt, never afraid to share his feelings.  Every single person on his team, whether it's the Penguins or Team USA, respects him immensely.

In short, a complete badass and absolutely decent human being, in every respect of the word.  I say decent because he always does what is right, whether on the ice or not, every single moment of his life.

Now, we come to this video, and what it tells about him.

First of all, how obviously sincere he is.  How much he actually takes this subject seriously, and isn't reading lines off a cue card because he has to.  His attitude shows how he is doing this not because he thinks it's just a good cause, but because any decent human being should be able to show respect and support for other decent human beings.  How everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and consideration, without any regard to who they are attracted to.  Quoting from raspsun's blog:

"What I love about this the number-one most is his compete and utter sincerity. Not earnest sincerity, just straight-up sincerity: this is what I truly believe, so fuck yeah, I'll come forward and talk about it. And there's absolutely a little bit of seriously, we need to do PSAs about this? we're still at that point as a society? in his attitude...and along with that, a little bit of we do? all right then, you don't even have to ask, I'll come find you."

On Twitter, Patrick Burke says:

"Brooks was the first player not on our advisory board to sign up. His leadership went a long way towards recruiting other players."

In the video, Brooks says:

"My teammates are my friends, and we're all playing to win."

In the end, that's all that matters.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Boston
The West
North Central
The Northeast
Philadelphia
The Inland North
The South
What American accent do you have?
Quiz Created on GoToQuiz

It looks like Midland and Boston accents are pretty much the same, which kind of makes sense.  I'm from Western Mass, which doesn't have as strong of an accent as out in Boston.

I think I did this a while ago, but I'm doing it again. Borrowed from midtownangel...

1. Bold the names of guys you’d definitely get with.

2. Italicize the names of guys you might get with after a little persuasion.

3. Leave the guys who don’t do anything for you alone.

4. Put a question (?) mark after the guys you’ve never heard of.

5. Strike the guys you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.

6. Add five guys to the list.

Here we go...Collapse )

Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Originally posted by gabrielleabelle at Mississippi Personhood Amendment
Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Not much to write home about...

EXCEPT THE PENS WON THEIR HOME OPENER TONIGHT.  I couldn't watch the first two periods since I was at work, but I got to listen to the first half of the third on the radio on the way home, and the last ten minutes at home.  Oh my fuck.  Several of my friends were able to go, so I was a trifle jealous, but it doesn't really matter now.  Brb, downloading the game off nhl.torrents and watching it asap.  By the way, check out how motherfucking amazing the Pens' intro video is this year:

Brooks is smiling!  And his hair is curling up like he's Superman or something.  Brb, taking a cold shower.

In remembrance of Steve Jobs...

To one of the most innovative and creative minds of the last generation, I hope you rest in peace.  One of your greatest legacies was the creation of the iPhone, which lead to the always entertaining phenomenon of auto-correct.  Going to damnyouautocorrect.com never ever fails to make me laugh, so in remembrance of you, here are some of my favorites.  Thank you for Apple, Pixar, and everything you've done.

As promised...

For mentalhygieneofficerjudy, and center_iced: Mathieu gives Breezer a headpat! This was from February 2009 in a game vs the Canucks. Breezer had just gotten high-sticked in the face and drew a double minor.

Photobucket

Somehow gifninja cut off some of it, so have a video too:

Science Fiction Reading List Meme

From andromeda26 ...

Bold the ones you’ve read, Italicize the ones you want to read, Underline books/series you’ve read part of, and Strikethrough ones you never intend to read.

Look under the cut...Collapse )

I wonder why the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis isn’t on this list? I’ve read every book in that except The Silver Chair.

(*edit* Sorry, LJ must have borked something up, because every time I try to put something under a cut, it disappears. I’ll fix it tomorrow, as well as bold/italicize/whatever.)

(**edit** Ok, let's see if I fixed it...)

Next Gif Project: the Habs/Canucks game from 2-24-09 when Mathieu has recently returned to Montreal & Breezer definitely earns his paycheck!

I should be in bed right now.  But I still need to pack - I'm flying back to MA early tomorrow morning, and I've been spending time making gifs and eating Naan and olives.  Very very excited about going home for the week.  Mom says Dad still hasn't grown his stache back yet.  When he came out here two months ago to see some Pirates games with me, he just appeared without his stache.  He's had it since 1978, so not only had I never seen him without it, but my mom hadn't even seen him without it.  He says he looks younger without it, but I still wish he'd grow it back.  It's weird.

Anyway...

I've felt so homesick lately, and I've been looking forward to going back for so long, that this week has simply c r a w l e d by.  I'm looking forward to seeing the parents, the dogs and cats, shopping with my mom, visiting Sturbridge Villiage, and going to Misquamicut Beach in Rhode Island.  Right now I'm so white that my farmer's tan I got two months ago at the Pirates game still hasn't faded, so I'm hoping to rectify that by sunbathing often.  This is what happens when it's an overcast day and I'm outside without SPF 50 sunscreen for 20 minutes or more. *facepalm*

SOME GIFS.

Probably mentalhygiene, officerjudy , and center_iced will be the only ones with some interest in these, but there's plenty of eye candy for everyone. ;D

These are from a documentary in French about the 1993 Cup team, called "15 Ans Deja" (my retained French knowledge from high school  informs me that this means "15 Years Already"). Unfortunately these are only about half the gifs I can do at the moment, gifsoup.com has been royally borked up for the past few days. Hopefully there will be more later.  Anyway, have some Breezer, Carbo, and a little Kirk and Mathieu...mostly just talking and being pretty. God willing there will soon be some more Carbo, Kirk and others....
